Victor Marie Hugo

Victor Hugo was born February 26th, 1802
and died on May 22nd, 1885 at the age of 83. He was born in the town of
Besancon, France and passed away in Paris. Victor was considered to be one of
the greatest and best known French writers of that time; he was a French poet,
novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic Movement.
Victor’s
parents were both French natives. His father, Joseph-Leopold-Sigisbert Hugo, was
a military officer who later, in his military career, severed as a general under
Napoleon.
Victor Hugo was a man of many talents; he first studied law between 1815
and 1818. He never fully committed to the practice of law. By the help and
encouragement of his mother, he pursued his literary career and founded the Conservateur Litteraire. This was a
journal that made up and mixed of his works and works of his friends that he
later published. Victor’s fist book of poetry was published and released in
1821, the same year his mother passed away and when he married his wife Adele
Foucher. In 1823, he published his first novel followed by some of plays. Over
the first decade of his literary career is when his Romantic work came into
play.
Some of Victor’s most popular works are, Notre-Dame
de Paris (The
Hunchback of Notre Dame), and Les Miserables.
Later on in life some of Victor’s work started
to turn more towards the darker side and focused on topics such of God, Satan,
and death.
Victor Hugo was diagnosed with cerebral congestion in 1878 and lived a
short 5 years later and passed away on May 22, 1885. They renamed the street in
Paris in which he lived on to Avenue Victor Hugo in honor of him. Today he is
still celebrated as being one of the best French Literary poet and novelist.
